Ten Ways to Save Money on Gas

24.03.2022

Petrol is getting lesser and getting more expensive day by day and we need to find new sources to replace it eventually. But until a better solution, we’ll probably use it for a while. At least we can do our part using it more efficiently and save some money on it, too.

  1. Choose the best route: Whenever possible, take the route with the fewest stop signs and traffic lights. The shortest route isn’t always the most fuel-efficient way to go.
  2. Avoid rush hours: Nobody likes to be stuck in traffic, including our cars. The constant stop-and-go puts a stress on your engine components, and idling makes you consume more gas. Use apps to track traffic and avoid busy roads, or why not stay a little longer in the office to make your boss happy. Just kidding, but if you can work on ‘flexi-time’ it could be a great way to avoid rush hours, save money on gas, and finish off tomorrow’s work so you can come in later tomorrow.
  3. Keep your car in a good shape: Your car must be regularly serviced. A good service should include; tuning the engine, changing the filters, and changing the correct motor oil, because these will all help your car to be more fuel efficient. You can also do small services yourself between regular full ones.
  4. Drive steady: Driving fast may be fun, but it also increases drag, which increases fuel consumption. Driving just below the speed limit and driving smoothly (not accelerating quickly) uses gas more efficiently. Try it; you might not have to fill up quite so often.
  5. Buy gas early or late in the day: Purchase gas early or late in the day, especially during warm months. Gas is cooler earlier in the day, and therefore denser. As temperatures rise, gas density falls and you get less of it when you pump.
  6. Drive less: I can practically hear the complaints, but it’s not so hard. Combine your errands into one trip to avoid repeat drives into town, the supermarket or other places. Consider walking or cycling instead of driving for nearby trips.
  7. Monitor your tires: The right tire pressure is really important for vehicle control. Properly inflated tires reduce friction and offer better gas mileage. You should regularly check your car’s tires, especially during season changes and drastic weather changes. Also, under-inflated tires wear out faster and you may have to buy a new set prematurely.
  8. Turn off the AC: We all love ACs, but did you know they turn our cars into gas guzzlers? Turn off your AC as much as possible. To keep yourself cool in the car, park in the shade and roll down your windows a bit to get some air circulation going.
  9. Drive manual: Save the manuals! Manual transmissions are more fuel-efficient than automatic ones. If you drive one, shift up early and shift down late to save on fuel. Also, shift into neutral when the car is standing still to reduce the strain on your transmission.
  10. Follow the special offers: These days many gas stations offer you reasonable discounts on gas, diesel and LPG. You can save by keeping an eye out for these discounts. Apart from hanging big signs near the station, many gas companies use their smartphone apps to announce them. Download the app and save some money.
